Legacy Trust UK, a charitable trust, has been set up, to support a wide range of innovative cultural and sporting activities for all, which celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and which will leave a lasting legacy after the Games, in communities throughout the United Kingdom. www.legacytrustuk.org
The Legacy Trust has made an allocation of £1.51 million to the East of England, and approved first stage proposals to run a major project. In the East of England, we have developed a programme, using the inspiration of the London 2012 Games, to engage people in cultural and sporting activities, giving skills, confidence and life opportunities leading up to and after 2012. Two complementary programme strands linked to professional cultural and sporting events are being developed.
Personal Best: regional implementation of the Learning and Skills Council accredited programme, piloted in London in 2007/08, to help participants find jobs and training opportunities. Graduates will also be offered an interview to be a volunteer during the London 2012 Games.
Events: The programme will culminate in a series of high-profile, high-quality, public events in 2010, 2011 and 2012, at which ‘graduates’ of the programme will play an integral role in the professional delivery of existing major cultural and sporting activities.
A regional advisory group, representing the regional cultural agencies, has been formed and Living East submitted the programme business plan for approval to the Legacy Trust Board in June 2008. If successful, the regional programme plans will be announced in September, when we will be calling for organisations to assist in delivery of the programme from early 2009.
